When I stumbled upon Alabaster Rose Designs I was so impressed with all Melinda Reyes is able to do with her apartment, constantly rearranging and finding new decorative touches from local flea-markets.
Her endless posts on alabasterrosedesigns.com showcasing photos from just her apartment show that it’s not about how much space you have, it’s about what you do with it. Enjoy this interview with tips from Melinda!
When I stumbled upon Alabaster Rose Designs I quickly fell in love with your home decor photos but what surprised me was that they were all from your own home! How did you develop such a love and talent for home decor?
Oh that is so extremely kind. Most of my early career was spent doing visual merchandising for different home decor shops and I have always loved changing things around my home, it keeps it fresh for me and my style is always evolving. I guess I developed some of my love for decorating from my mom when I was growing up. She loved to change the decor in our house quite frequently and I would always accompany her to some of our favorite decorating stores for new things. When Rachel Ashwell started her company, Shabby Chic, that’s when I was really bitten by the decorating bug. Eventually I opened a booth at a very popular antique shop here in California and a few years later I was fortunate enough to work for Rachel Ashwell’s company as a sales associate in one of her stores, and let me tell you, I was in heaven. Her love of pairing chippy vintage furnishings with shimmering crystal chandeliers and comfortable yet beautiful slip covered chairs and sofas was a treat for the eyes and the senses! Using vintage and worn pieces really spoke to me and since then I’ve tried to add beauty and comfort to my home by using vintage accessories and furnishings.
You seem to have such a skill for creating soft sacred clutter-free spaces within your home. Do you have any tips for how people can do the same within their homes?
I try to keep my collections paired together. I find that when I put pieces of the same kind here and there throughout my home it gets a bit crowded and isn’t very appeasing to the eyes. But if you group like things together, it seems to tell a story and just makes more sense. This was not always easy for me, I am a huge collector, so over the years I have really had to learn to pair my collections down to things that I really love. If I’m at the flea market and I see something that makes my heart beat a little faster, it’s probably going home with me.
Is there a certain feeling that you try to get the rooms in your home to emit? Why is that feeling so important to you?
Probably a feeling of warmth and comfort, a home that’s lived in. That has always been so important to me, to have a home that my family really loves spending time in. A home that is functional yet beautiful. I still don’t feel my home is exactly where I want it to be, but I think a lot of us are like that, perfectionists, always trying to get it just right.
Do you find that the decor of your home affects the energy of you and your family?
I do. It’s a very casual place, so we’re not afraid to plop down on the furniture and enjoy it. My children can relax and play and bang on the furniture without worrying about damaging the finish of the piece. One more scratch or dent just adds more charm. I think a home can create moods, if it’s too uptight, no one wants to hang out there.
Do the words “gentle but powerful” resonate with you or your work in any way?
Absolutely. I’m also a jewelry designer and a lot of my designs are created using vintage rosary medals featuring the Virgin Mary. She has always be such a gentle yet powerful figure to me, and I always hope that this resonates through my designs.
